2 DIY fine motor skills games for kids' development

fine motor skills games for kids' development

Fine motor skills development is an essential part of childhood, and teaching your kids coordination and improving mobility is a lot of fun too with fine motor skills games. We’ve designed a learning colours game and a DIY counting game for you to try at home and fuel your family’s imagination, as well as those all-important fine motor skills. They could even double up as children’s party game activities! Let’s limber up and begin…

Our fine motor skills games involve the use of brightly coloured paint, which can end up on little hands and faces as well as where it’s meant to go! Keep some Cushelle tissues on hand to wipe faces gently and effectively as you go along, so there’s no need to interrupt the game.

Colour matching castle

Teach little ones to count and match colours with this fun learning colours game. They’ll be ruling the roost in no time!

Takes about 3 hours

What you’ll need

  • 2 empty tissue boxes
  • 2 toilet roll tubes
  • Battlement templates
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Grey, red, blue, and green paint
  • Paint brush
  • Glue
  • Small circle punch
  1. First, lay an empty tissue box face down on your work surface. Take a toilet roll tube and place one end on the box and draw round it four times.
  2. Then, cut out your circles.
  3. Next, cut open and flatten the second empty tissue box. Use the templates to cut out large battlement strips.
  4. Now stick the battlement strips around the top edge of the tissue box, so that it starts to look like a castle.
  5. Paint the box and battlements with grey paint, before setting it aside to dry.
  6. Then paint around each hole with a different bright colour.
  7. To make the turrets, first draw and cut out four smaller battlement strips and glue around one end of each of the four toilet roll tubes.
  8. Paint the turrets in a different bright colour, and leave to dry, before sticking them to the corners of the grey castle.
  9. Finally, to finish the first of our fine motor skills activities, make the counters by painting scrap pieces of a tissue box with the different coloured paints.
  10. Allow the pieces to dry before using a small circle punch to cut out your counters.

And there we have it. Fine motor skills development is fun with our learning colours game. And if this colour matching game has gone down a treat, you can step it up a notch with our homemade matching pairs game. Ready, set, match!
